Typo 4.0.0

Posted by Joel Mon, 31 Jul 2006 07:24:00 GMT

I just upgraded to Typo 4.0.0. Looks about the same out here but on the admin side it is worlds better. I'm glad they finally made another release because I was sick of having to run off their trunk, as it has been ages since their last one.

Also, I have a weakness for serifs. Consequently, inspired by the new admin pages, I have just changed the site from Arial to my favorite serif font, Georgia. I apologize to those of you who can't stand them.

Photos

Posted by Joel Mon, 17 Jul 2006 02:59:15 GMT

The photos on the right of my blog are four random photos from Flickr. I never really used Flickr but I've been trying to fill it out with all of my old photos (I still don't have a new camera; I'll get one next paycheck).

Unfortunately it has a cap of some sort, and I have quite a few old photos I'd love to put in there (such as Japan, some college stuff). I don't take nearly enough photos but I really like the ones I have. I might just not use Flickr or I might pay for the pro Flickr thing which should remove the cap I think.

New site look

Posted by Joel Sat, 17 Jun 2006 03:02:00 GMT

So I took a few seconds and created a variation of the default theme for my blog. I actually like how it came out a lot. I got the top image as a test from my new job.

The site I'm working for now is Lucky Oliver. I grabbed that image from it. It's basically going to be a resource for stock photography and other visual design-related images and I think it will do well. The site isn't perfect yet but it just went live recently and lots of people have been submitting photos. I'm looking forward to improving it.

Joel is a nerd

My Dad is around, which means there are lots of photos. Now that I have a job, I'm going to buy a new camera soon. And then hopefully I can start using Flickr and incorporating photos into my life again, as well as my blog.

Yeh

Posted by Joel Thu, 01 Jun 2006 18:52:00 GMT

Yesterday I watched everyone's favorite movie about gay cowboys (one of the many!). It was really good.

I started writing a long entry about how it's naive and foolish to keep a personal journal like this on the web. How I'd been doing it since I was 14, but I needed to stop.

My rationale was that my name on the web should only be attached to positive work-related things. For instance, if I had a site with a portfolio of projects I'd worked on, and maybe a web development blog which was useful for fellow devs to read, I would look much more impressive.

Instead, potential employers or girlfriends or whatever can find this blog and see a guy talking about his life fairly candidly and for many people that can be a bit weird. I don't personally think my life or thoughts are all that outrageous. Sure, I don't present myself as some totally together and with it and perfect guy, but I'm pretty sincere with what I write about.

I don't have a secret double life, online or otherwise. This blog strips all of the mystery out of my life. Yes, I'm a guy who spends most days at the computer reading about random things, learning about things, implementing things, chatting with people, and some days I go out to eat or drink or visit people. It's not that abnormal.

As for why I do it, that's a tough question. But ultimately I decided not to close my blog. I don't want to push some fake public persona, this is the real me, and that's all I can be, so whatever. If you don't want to hire me on the basis of this blog than I don't want to work for you. I've learned over time how to be tactful and not offend people and still get my point across.

Anyway, I talked to the big company again today, and they really liked my worksheet. In fact, they said I got a perfect score, and that that was very rare. They also asked me for my GPA, which is kind of a bummer because it's not very high, but hopefully they won't judge me too harshly on that. I'm looking forward to interviewing with them.

I updated my resume on Monster and got two pokes today from companies. One is just a limited-scope PHP contracting gig. Pays really well so I'm going to probably take it if offered.

Splitting up posts

Posted by Joel Sun, 23 Apr 2006 19:00:00 GMT

In the future, I think I'm going to post articles split up into various categories. That way, if you're my friend, you can read about my boring day, and if you're some guy reading a Rails blog I just inadvertantly trackbacked, you can see what I have to say without hearing what I had for breakfast. I know the true pro route is to separate personal and professional blogs (if you even have a personal blog), but isn't that what categories are for? I'm just starting to realize, though, that perhaps the "life" category shouldn't be mixed with other ones which might be of interest to outside parties. Bear with me.

Typo!

Posted by Joel Fri, 14 Apr 2006 05:18:00 GMT

I have long been a Rails fan, but somehow have continued to use Wordpress -- a godawful LAMP system -- instead of switching to Typo. Being the lackadaisical fellow I am, I found myself with free time again tonight, much like every night. As such, my platform hypocrisy has ceased, and I once again get to start anew with a new blog.

Oh, sure, I could transfer the embarrassing contents of my old blog over to this one, but I see this as an opportunity to once again wipe the slate clean. Those of you who have been following my exploits know that my blogs rarely live that long before getting archived somewhere on my hard disk and never again read by anyone, including myself.

So! That said, here we are, the future is now, enjoy.
